Three exciting new exhibits at the Alf Engen Ski Museum will be unveiled at a Grand Opening reception to be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 11:30 to 1:00.
The Alf Engen Virtual Ski Jump is named in honor of the museum’s namesake who, in 1934, broke his own world record by jumping 296 feet, a distance that was never exceeded at near-by Ecker HIll. This unique, state-of-the-art exhibit lets museum guests experience the thrill of ski jumping on a virtual Utah Olympic Park jumping hill. JDH Group designed and installed this new exhibit.
Also to be introduced at the Grand Opening is the new Hometown Heroes exhibit featuring local Olympians who achieved medal success at the Sochi Olympic Winter Games. The five Olympians showcased include Ted Ligety, Gold medalist in the Men’s Giant Slalom; Steve Holcomb, Bronze medalist in both the two- and four-man bobsled; Sage Kotsenburg, Gold medalist in Slopestyle Snowboarding; Joss Christensen, Gold medalist in Slopestyle Skiing; and Danelle Umstead and guide Rob Umstead, Bronze medalists in Paralympic Alpine Skiing Super Combined.
The third unveiling is the collection of ski fashion, apparel, accessories, and equipment that Barbara Alley Simon donated to the museum. The fashions range from 1968 – 1998 and showcase the evolution of ski fashion and developments in ski apparel technology. The collection displays major fashion trends of each era’s prevailing style, from the bell-bottoms of the 1970s to the bright neons of the 1980s and highly technical designs of the 1990s.
The Virtual Ski Jump exhibit was made possible by private donations and seed money donated by Alan and Barbara Engen and the Alf and Evelyn Engen Endowment Fund. Other donors making all three exhibits possible are JDH Group, the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, Summit County RAP Tax Grant, Barbara Alley Simon, Park City Community Fund, PCMR Legacy Grant, Fischer Sports USA, Quinnovate, the Park City Rotary Club, and Rossignol North America.
