Induction Year: 2016

Ron Steele

Whether schussing down the inrun of a ski jump or presiding over a major international ski company, Ron Steele, born in 1953, had a penchant for soaring to the pinnacle of his endeavors.

The Washington native was a ski jumper for the University of Utah from 1974 to 1978 and named a collegiate All-American three consecutive years. In 1975 and 1976 he won the Alf Engen Sportsmanship Award and in 1977 won the NCAA Individual Championship in ski jumping. In 1978 he received the team’s coveted David Novelle Outstanding Skier Award. Steele won the U. S. Junior National Championship in 1971 and was a member of the U.S. Ski Jumping Team from 1972 to 1977.

He competed for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1972 in Sapporo, Japan and was a member of the World Championship team in Falun, Sweden in 1974, the same year he won the Senior National Jumping Championships. Combining his exceptional knowledge of skiing with a keen business sense, the Salt Lake City resident rose from an alpine technical representative for Group Rossignol North America in 1978 to its president in 2012, where he oversaw the company’s sales and distribution of the Rossignol, Dynastar, Lange, Look, and Kerma brands.

When not skiing, fishing, or traveling, Steele generously volunteered his time and resources to his church and to numerous grateful winter sports nonprofit organizations.
