As a designer, builder, inspector, and consultant in the realm of ski lifts, tows, and trams in the United States and Canada, the contributions LeRoy Schultz, born in 1937, made to the industry are immeasurable. A native of Ogden, Utah and a graduate of the University of Utah, Schultz constructed more than 40 chairlifts in North America and was a regional tramway engineer for the U.S. Forest Service in Idaho and Montana. He served on the Montana Ski Areas board and received the “Young Engineer of the Year” Award from the Montana Chapter of Professional Engineers.
In 1972 Schultz was named to the American National Standards Institute Ropeway Committee B77.1, which set standards for the design, manufacture, construction, and operation of all tramways, gondolas, chairlifts, surface lifts, and tows used at ski areas. He served as chairman of the committee for over fifteen years. The last thirty years of his career were with the ski area insurance industry.
In 1991 and 1995, respectively, the Intermountain Ski Areas Association and the Rocky Mountain Lift Association honored him for his contributions to ski lift safety. These well-deserved awards and accolades are exclamation points to the extraordinary career of LeRoy Schultz.
