Lou Lorenz began skiing in 1946 and started ski teaching at the Deseret News Ski School in 1950. Lou began his professional ski teaching career at Alta in 1953, and obtained his Professional Ski Instructors of America-Intermountain Division (PSIA-I) certification in 1956. As a member of the Alf Engen Ski School, he taught skiing at Alta for ten years, and during this same time period, he served as Ski School Director at Little Mountain. He was also co-founder and part owner of the Greater Salt Lake Ski School which contracted ski teaching at Solitude for four years and Gorgoza for three years.
In 1970, Lou became a member of the Park City Ski School. He was involved in the organization and administration of professional ski teaching, serving in the following capacities:
PSIA-I Board of Directors (17 years)
PSIA-I Certification Chairman (3 years)
PSIA-I Certification Committee (10 years)
PSIA-I Representative to the National Certification Advisory Board (3 years)
PSIA-I President (3 years)
Lou also helped organize the Past President’s Advisory Committee of PSIA-I and served as its Chairman for 10 years. In 1967, Lou was recognized by the PSIA-I with the Marc Strand Award for Outstanding Service. In 1968, he was the delegate from PSIA-I to the 8th Interski (International Ski Congress) held in Aspen, Colorado. Then in 1971, he was honored as a National Lifetime Member of PSIA.
